TripMath (“TripMath,” “we,” “us”) is an app for tracking and splitting shared travel expenses — you record who paid for what, and TripMath shows who owes whom. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. By using TripMath, you agree to it.
TripMath records balances only. It is not a bank or payment service and does not move money, so we never collect bank, card, or other financial-account details.
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the app:
- Account. When you sign in with Apple, Google, or email, we receive a unique identifier and, where available, your name and email address. You can set or change your display name and profile photo.
- Your trip content. The trips and groups you create or join, and the expenses and settlements you record — descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, categories, notes, and any receipt or other images you attach. You can describe an expense in plain language and TripMath turns it into an entry on your device. If you use AI receipt scanning (a TripMath Pass feature), the receipt image you choose is sent to our AI provider, Google, via the Gemini API, to read the amount, date, and merchant; the free on-device scanner processes the image on your device and does not send it anywhere.
- Contacts you choose. If you invite someone from your phone's contacts, TripMath reads your contacts on your device only so you can pick a person, and uses just the contact you select to send that invitation. We don't upload your address book.
- Notifications, diagnostics & usage. A device token if you enable push notifications. To keep TripMath reliable, we automatically collect crash reports and basic diagnostics (device model, OS version, app version) through our third-party diagnostics provider; that crash and diagnostic data is not tied to your identity — no IP address or account is attached. Separately, we record in-app usage events — which features get used, for example creating a trip, adding an expense, or viewing the upgrade screen — in our own backend and through Google Analytics for Firebase, linked to a pseudonymous account identifier, to understand how TripMath is used and improve it. These events never include amounts, names, or the contents of your trips, and we've configured analytics without the advertising identifier — nothing is used for advertising or cross-app tracking. You can turn usage analytics off any time in the app (Me → Data & Privacy → Share usage analytics).
With your permission, TripMath uses your camera or photo library so you can add a receipt or a profile photo.
How we use your information
- To run the service — sync your trips across your devices and the people you share them with, and calculate balances and who owes whom.
- To send invitations and the notifications you turn on, such as settle-up reminders, by push and email.
- To respond to your support requests and feedback.
- To keep TripMath secure, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information or use it for third-party advertising.
How information is shared
- With your trip and group members. TripMath is collaborative: your name, photo, and the expenses and settlements you record in a trip or group are visible to the other members of that trip or group, so everyone's balances stay in sync.
- With service providers that operate TripMath on our behalf — for example cloud hosting and database infrastructure, email delivery, a crash-reporting and diagnostics provider, Google Analytics for Firebase (usage analytics, as described above), and, for TripMath Pass AI receipt scanning, Google (Gemini API), which processes the receipt image you submit to extract its details. When you record an expense in a foreign currency, your device fetches the conversion rate directly from a third-party exchange-rate provider, which necessarily receives your device's IP address and the currency pair. These providers may use your data only to provide their service to us and under confidentiality obligations. We also rely on Apple and Google to authenticate sign-ins and on Apple's Push Notification service to deliver notifications.
- For legal and safety reasons when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
Data retention & account deletion
We keep your information while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Me → Data & Privacy → Delete Account). Deleting removes your sign-in and your personal profile.
Because TripMath is a shared ledger, the expenses and settlements you recorded stay with their trip so the other members' balances remain correct — but they are anonymized so you can no longer be identified from them. See how to delete your account for details.
Your choices & rights
- Edit your profile, or delete your account, any time in the app.
- Turn notifications on or off in the app and in your device settings.
- Turn usage analytics off in the app (Me → Data & Privacy → Share usage analytics).
- Grant or revoke contacts, camera, and photo access in your device settings — these are always optional.
- Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. Contact us to make a request and we'll respond as required by law.
Security
We protect your information with measures including encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to keep your data safe.
International users
TripMath may be operated from, and your information processed in, countries other than the one you live in. Wherever it is processed, we protect it consistent with this policy.
Children
TripMath isn't directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
